Restoring a Space for Reflection and Celebration
The Hendrix Labyrinth had begun to fade so significantly that visitors could almost lose track of the single, circuitous path. To address the problem, PCE helped give the labyrinth a deep cleaning that restored its original colors.
In addition, PCE purchased four new benches for the area around the labyrinth and moved the existing benches onto cement pads in the grassy area beyond. As a result, visitors now have additional spaces for studying, meditation, and reflection. PCE also added a brick column at the entrance with historical information about labyrinths and the many ways people can walk them.
Labyrinths are known to foster contemplative prayer and introspection. However, they can also provide a setting for joyful celebrations, including weddings, graduations, and other rites of passage. Ultimately, walking a labyrinth can be a gift you give yourself.
The Hendrix College Labyrinth is a modified Chartres design with eight circuits instead of the original eleven. Nicholas Pippins’ Hendrix Odyssey project inspired the design, and the labyrinth debuted in 2007.

PCE’s work at the Hendrix College Labyrinth helps preserve this unique campus space for reflection, study, celebration, and community connection. In addition, continued support can help maintain the improvements already made and provide resources for future enhancements as needs arise.
